How this comparison was made
PlayaFood’s restaurant reviews come from my own visits. This article is a comparison of published tour listings and operator information, rather than firsthand reviews of the tours. The recommendations below reflect the listed itinerary, practical details, price and traveler feedback. They are not personal ratings.
Details were checked on October 14, 2026. For a consistent price comparison, the sample booking was two adults on November 17, 2026, with prices displayed in US dollars. These are available sample quotes, not guaranteed prices for your trip. Dates, group size, exchange rates and tour options can change the total. Review figures combine Viator and Tripadvisor feedback as displayed by Viator.
The quick comparison
| Tour | Good fit | US$ / adult | Group cap |
|---|---|---|---|
| General walking tour | First visit | $79.51 | 12 |
| Secret Food Tours | Regional dishes | $81.00 | 12 |
| Vegan food tour | Plant-based eating | $85.67 | 10 |
| Seafood and beer | Focused seafood lunch | $104.15 | 10 |
| Street-food crawl | Lower price and tequila | $69.99 | 20 |
All five list approximately three hours. Caps above are the live Viator limits. Prices are per adult for the sample date, not a quote for every departure.
1 The general walking tour for a first visit
Eating With Carmen’s Playa del Carmen Walking Food Tour is the most established option in this comparison by review volume: 4.9/5 from 1,365 reviews when checked.
The operator describes seven tasting stops, with examples including tamales, mole, tacos and regional pork dishes. Food and non-alcoholic drinks are included, and vegetarian choices are available if requested ahead. The route also introduces local history and street art.
This is my first listing to investigate if you want variety and a manageable introduction to eating around town. Plan to reach the meeting point yourself. It starts outside the ADO station at Juárez Avenue and Fifth Avenue; transport there and guide gratuities are extra.

2 Secret Food Tours for a regional tasting menu
The Playa del Carmen Food Tour with 8+ Authentic Yucatan Dishes is operated by Secret Food Tours. Its listed menu includes fish tacos, tacos al pastor, cochinita pibil panuchos, guacamole, chocolate ice cream and a surprise dish. The operator describes seven stops, so “8+ dishes” should not be read as eight restaurant visits.
The appeal is a food-led introduction to regional flavors, with a different operator and route from Eating With Carmen. Viator displayed 5.0/5 from 40 reviews, a much smaller feedback sample than the general walking tour.
The listed start and finish are different locations. Check both before arranging transport, and ask ahead about dietary requirements. The currently checked Viator inclusions do not promise alcoholic drinks.

3 The dedicated vegan route
Eating With Carmen also runs a separate vegan tour, listed on Viator as “Playa del Camen Vegan Mexican Food Tour.” The spelling is Viator’s; the tour takes place in Playa del Carmen.
This is the clearest fit for travelers who want the whole outing built around plant-based food. The published route combines a fruit stop with local eateries, and the operator describes vegan versions of Mexican dishes. Food and non-alcoholic beverages are included. Viator showed 4.9/5 from 45 reviews.
The important distinction is dietary scope: a vegetarian option on another tour does not establish that a vegan meal is available. This dedicated route makes the intention clear. Still confirm any allergies, ingredient restrictions or cross-contact concerns before booking.

4 Seafood and beer for a focused lunch
Mexican Beer & Seafood Madness in Playa del Carmen is Eating With Carmen’s coastal-food option. Its four-stop walking itinerary pairs three seafood venues with an ice-cream finish. Seafood tacos, tostadas and beer feature in the published description.
Choose this if seafood is what you most want to explore, and included beer adds value for you. It is the most expensive sample in this comparison. Viator displayed 5.0/5, but from only 12 reviews, so that score has less supporting feedback than the larger listings.
Alcohol is served to travelers aged 18 and over. If you do not drink, ask what substitutions are available rather than assuming a lower price. Getting to and from the meeting point is your responsibility.

5 The street-food crawl for a lower-priced evening
Mexican Street Food Crawl in Playa del Carmen is supplied by Rockstarcrawls. It includes food tastings, water, sodas or fruit drinks, and a tequila tasting. Its sample departure was 5 p.m., making it worth considering as an evening meal and introduction to town. Viator showed 4.8/5 from 124 reviews.
The trade-off is a larger listed group cap and less precise route information. Its itinerary mentions a minivan segment, while different sections describe the finish differently. Confirm the current route and endpoint before booking. Hotel pickup is excluded.
The description also mentions seasonal insect dishes. Treat those as possible examples, not guaranteed tastings. The tequila-shop stop may suit some travelers more than others.

Should you book a tour or explore independently
A tour makes most sense when you want someone to choose the route, explain dishes and handle ordering. Booking early in your stay also gives you time to revisit places you enjoy. A focused vegan or seafood itinerary can be useful when you already know what you want to discover.
For a flexible meal at your own pace, start with PlayaFood’s food map and restaurant visits instead. The interactive menus can help you choose a dish and order it in Spanish. You can make one stop, stay longer somewhere you like, or change plans without following a group.
Before you pay
All five checked Viator listings offer cancellation for a full refund at least 24 hours before the experience; use the local-time deadline shown on your booking. All five are listed as not wheelchair accessible, and English is offered. Ask the operator about any other access or language needs.
Confirm your exact meeting point, dietary requirements and final total. Wear comfortable shoes, allow for heat and rain, and leave room to eat. Then choose the route that matches your appetite, rather than treating a five-star score or a long list of tastings as the whole decision.
