Is Santander the cheapest?
Santander is a useful low-fee option to check, but it is not always the cheapest bank in Playa. The Banco de México catalog includes local Santander withdrawal charges of 23.20–34.80 MXN including VAT; some other banks list lower charges. These are general charges for other-bank cards, not a guaranteed quote for every foreign card.
Santander’s published general tariff is 30 MXN before VAT, or 34.80 MXN including 16% VAT. The charge shown on your ATM screen is the one to check. Your own bank may also charge for international withdrawals or currency conversion. [1–3]
The directory shows each location’s reported fee where available. A missing or zero fee in the source is marked “not confirmed”, not “free”.
MXN / DCC
Say no to the conversion offer.
If the ATM offers to charge your home currency, that is dynamic currency conversion (DCC). Our recommendation: decline it and continue in MXN. The offered exchange rate can include a percentage markup; it is often a more expensive way to convert. [4–6]
KEEP: MXN / WITHOUT CONVERSION
DECLINE: CONVERSION TO YOUR HOME CURRENCY
Do not add “bad exchange rate” and “percentage markup” twice if they describe the same cost. A separate conversion fee can also be disclosed on screen. The ATM withdrawal fee and any fees from your own bank remain separate.
At the ATM: keep the withdrawal in pesos.
Choose a bank ATM.
A machine at a bank branch is an easy place to start. Check the card slot and keypad, cover your PIN, and use a debit card if you want to avoid credit-card cash-advance charges.
Select Mexican pesos (MXN).
Choose the amount you actually need. A fixed ATM charge is paid per withdrawal, so several small withdrawals can cost more than one larger withdrawal.
Read the withdrawal fee.
This is the ATM operator’s charge. Continue only if you accept it. It is separate from the optional currency conversion that may appear next.
Decline the ATM’s conversion.
Choose “Decline conversion”, “Without conversion” or the option that keeps the transaction in MXN. The wording varies. Declining conversion is different from cancelling the withdrawal.
Take your card and cash.
Check the amount and keep the receipt if you need it. The card network and your issuer handle conversion under your card’s terms when the transaction stays in MXN.
THE COST IN PESOS
How much could accepting conversion cost?
These are examples, not a current Santander exchange quote. If conversion costs 5%, 10% or 15% more than the alternative, a 2,000 MXN withdrawal costs about 100, 200 or 300 MXN extra in peso-equivalent terms.
Cash amount + example conversion cost:
Example: 2,000 × 10% = 200 MXN extra. ATM and card-issuer fees are excluded from this comparison. The total above is a peso-equivalent comparison, not the amount charged to your foreign-currency account. Your actual loss depends on the quoted rate, markup and card terms.
A rate giving you 10% fewer pesos per dollar means paying about 11.1% more dollars for the same pesos. A worse exchange rate and a percentage added to the final cost use different maths.
